This year SuperYacht Spares has once again chosen to support a charity instead of sending Christmas cards and presents. The chosen charity for 2017 is the Plastic Soup Foundation. According to the international press, the Plastic Soup Foundation is one of the leading advocacy groups to tackle plastic pollution.
The mission of this Dutch foundation, which was founded in 2011, is No plastic waste in our water!
They continuously seek to draw attention to the plastic soup problem through campaigns, news reports and social media. They develop special lessons for primary and secondary schools. They also work together with experts, politicians, organisations, universities and companies who have similar / like-minded missions and vision. The Plastic Soup Foundation stimulates all possible (innovative) solutions that help to combat the plastic soup at the source. Measures that prevent plastic from ending up in the environment, water and ultimately in the sea. This includes the reduction of single-use consumer plastics, the development of a Plastic Footprint-scan for companies and also installations that cleverly capture plastic in rivers.
Fortunately, we are seeing more and more initiatives to reduce plastic pollution and create awareness. Take for example, the Volvo Ocean Race. They put sustainability at its heart and focus on taking action to help 'Turn the Tide on Plastic' - the rapidly growing and critical problem of plastic polluting the ocean. They also adopted the clean seas campaign of the United Nations. We too, as a maritime company, share the responsibility and are committed to helping reduce plastic soup.
